일전에 나는 옛 동창을 우연히 만났다.

The other day I ran into an old friend from school.

뜻밖에 우연히 만나다.

 

그들은 새로운 체스 클럽을 결성할 계획을 세우고 있다.

They are planning to start up a new chess club.

             =intend to /새로 시작하다.

 

나는 여러번 제안을 했지만 위원회는 어떤 제안도 받아들이지 않았다.

I made various suggestions, but the committee did not act on any of them.

~에 따라 행동하다.

 

구인광고가 몇 번 나가자 수백 명이 지원했다.

Several jobs were advertised and hundreds of applicants put in for them.

셰일라는 우리를 대신해서 임시로 일한다. 우리는 언제라도 그녀에게 의지할 수 있다.

Sheila does some temporary work for us - We can alway fall back on her.

 

그 회사는 전국의 모든 지점을 폐쇄하기로 결정했다.

The firm has decided shut all their country branches down.

 

필은 부모님에게 돈을 빌릴 수 있으리라 믿는다.

Phil is banking on getting a loan from his parents.

 

무리엘은 시험에 큰 기대를 걸고 있는데 나는 그녀가 시험에서 좋은 점수를 받기를 바란다.

I hope that Muriel gets a  good mark on her exam because she's banking on it.

 

잭은 차장직을 내심 바란다고 말했지만 부장들은 잭을 거부했다.

Jack said that he wished to be considered for the post of deputy manager, but the directors passed him over.

 

나는 프레드에게 확답을 받아내려 했지만 잭은 다음 주에 언제 다시 오겠다고만 말했다.

I have been trying to pin Fred down, but all he would say is that he will be here some time next week.

 

그 회사는 겨울에는 직원을 줄인다.

The firm takes fewer people on in the winter months.

 

지금은 결원이 없어서 당신을 고용할 수 없다.

We can't take you on just now as we have no vacancies.
